Dragons have been a recurring motif in the history of jewelry design. In China, jewels consisting of an image of the fantastic animal carved out of jade have existed for thousands of years. The examples created in the Renaissance often had a baroque pearl body with enameled tail, head and claws. The present pair of earrings is a transitional piece, with its silver and gold mounting pointing towards the creations of the 19th century.
